Math at PSU: I started my undergrad in mathematics in 1966 with one year advanced placement (AP) credit in math from high school calculus. By the middle of my third year, I had finished all my math requirements, and could have graduated early. But the Vietnam War was drafting students as soon as they graduated, so since I was "entitled" to a 4 year undergrad deferment, I came up with the idea of creating my own B.S.-M.A. four year program. I got both degrees in 1970. But that is only the beginning of the story! I made it into the newly established draft lottery system with number 315, and could freely go on to do a doctorate. I went to Columbia University for my Ph.D. in mathematics which did with Sammy Eilenberg. Since then, my career spans Computer Science and Discrete Mathematics. I taught at the Courant Inst (NYU), postdoc in Paris and Rehovot , & worked at Bell Labs, before moving to Israel in 1982. I've been a researcher at IBMHaifa, Prof. of Computer Science at Bar-Ilan Univ and now Founding Director of the Caesarea Rothschild Inst in Haifa. I have written books, founded a journal which I still edit, and initiated and run national and international symposia.
